Maria Valdez Cortez

Born in the city of Durango, Mexico. The life, her curiosity for learning and the pleasure of knowing different cultures have led her to live in cities such as Carrington, North Dakota, USA. Monterrey, Tuxtla Gutiérrez and Oaxaca, all in Mexico, Limerick and Dublin in Ireland. She studied Marketing at ITESM (Monterrey, Mx) focusing on commercial projects, sustainability, costs, buying and space management. This experience led her to start her current sales business, creating her own company in Ireland. Since she was a child, she has had an interest in painting and plastic arts, later she immersed herself in techniques such as oil and pastel painting. Her work has been shown in group exhibitions in Mexico, USA and Canada. It is because of her great ability and passion to participate in extracurricular activities while in university, that she did not have the time to persue her love for artistic activities. Her competitive nature makes her constantly observe and compare her artistic expression with other artists from different areas. This is one of the reasons why she has explored drawing and painting portraits, landscapes, animals, abstract art and lately ventures into the technique she learned as a child, papier-mâché. Establishing herself in Ireland, she realized the type of handicrafts that are promoted from Mexico that tourists identify as being Mexican. Appreciating the great colour and expressionism of these, identifies that commonly what is found in the markets are inexpensive things that tourists buy as a souvenir. There is a market space for quality craftsmenship as an area of growth. Doing Piñatas is her way of getting connected with plastic art and inspiration with her childhood. The use of organic and biodegradable materials is one of her priorities in recognizing the impermanence of this object. Her love for Mexican art, colours, culture and roots for her country of origin, encouraged her to use paper maché techniques. Cultural icons are given a twist in their conceptualization, a unique and rustic touch, and they are the meticulous details that enrich her work. Her artistic influences are reflected in her love of her country and culture. Muralists, artisans, dancers, photographers, musicians and in whom she expresses her way of life linked to her profession. Her passion for traveling and the constant change in her life makes her technique different each time which can be seen by the uniqueness of each of her pieces.

Nace en la ciudad de Durango, Durango, México. La vida, su curiosidad por el aprendizaje y el placer por conocer diversas culturas la han llevado a vivir en ciudades como Dakota del Norte, Estados Unidos, Monterrey, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, Oaxaca, México, Limerick y Dublín en Irlanda. Estudió la Carrera de Mercadotecnia en el ITESM (Monterrey, Mx) enfocándose en proyectos comerciales, sustentabilidad, costos, compras y manejo de espacios. Esta experiencia, la lleva a emprender su actual negocio de ventas creando su propia empresa en Irlanda. Desde pequeña , 8 años, la pintura y las artes plásticas forman parte de su formación y mas adelante se sumerge en técnicas como el óleo y el pastel. Su trabajo ha sido mostrado en exposiciones colectivas en México, E.U. y Canadá. Es a raíz de su gran capacidad y pasión por participar en actividades extracurriculares, en tiempos de universidad, que se aleja parcialmente de las actividades plásticas. Su carácter competitivo la hace constantemente observar y comparar su expresión artística con el de otros artistas de diferentes áreas. Esta es una de las razones por las cuales ha explorado dibujar y pinta rostros, paisajes, animales, arte abstracto y últimamente incursiona en la técnica que aprendió de pequeña, el papel maché. Al fijar su residencia en Irlanda, se da cuenta del tipo de artesanías que son promovidas de México y/o que el turista identifica como mexicanas. Apreciando el gran colorido y expresionismo de estas, identifica que comúnmente lo que se encuentra en los mercados son cosas baratas que el turista paga como suvenir e identifica los espacios para artesanos de calidad como un área de oportunidad. El hacer Piñatas es su modo de reencontrarse con el arte plástico y por inspiración con su infancia., el uso de materiales orgánicos y biodegradables es una de sus prioridades al reconocer la impermanencia de este objeto. Su amor hacia el arte mexicano, a los colores, la cultura y el arraigo por su país de origen, la incentivó a usar las técnicas del papel maché. A los iconos culturales les da un giro en su conceptualización, un toque único y rústico, y son los minuciosos detalles que enriquecen su obra. Sus influencias artísticas se ven reflejadas en su amor a su país y cultura. Muralistas, artesanos, bailarines, fotógrafos, músicos y en quien plasma su manera de vivir vinculado a su oficio. El gusto por viajar y el constante cambio en su vida hace que su obra sea diferente en cada una de sus piezas y técnicas.
